What is Eyelid Aesthetics (Blepharoplasty)?

Eyelid aesthetics are surgical interventions performed for cosmetic purposes to eliminate deformities and functional disorders in the eyelids. It is possible to intervene in the lower or upper lid. Vision problems in elderly people can be corrected by removing sagging on the upper lid.

What are Eyelid Problems?

As the skin ages, it gradually loses its elasticity. With the loss of gravity and flexibility, skin begins to accumulate on the eyelids. It causes black bags, wrinkles and puffiness on the lower eyelid. The oil that cushions the eyeball to the skull can also cause puffiness in the upper and lower eyelids. The sagging skin on the upper eyelid falls on the eyelashes and restricts the eye's way of seeing. The thin membrane that holds the oil in place weakens with age, allowing it to rise to the lids.

Eyelid drooping, which is widely used among the people, is called drooping or sagging of the eyelid caused by trauma or age-related reasons.

How is Eyelid Surgery Performed?

During surgery, an incision is made in the folds of your eyelids, in the crease of the upper eyelid, and just below the eyelashes or behind the lower eyelid. During surgery, your surgeon determines where excess skin and fat pads need to be removed and makes precise marks. Sometimes the underlying fatty tissue can also be removed.

These tissues are removed with surgical instruments such as surgical scissors, radio frequency cutting devices or lasers. It is reshaped by means of sutures or tissue adhesives.

During the procedure, your surgeon decides how much skin, muscle and fat will be removed as a result of preoperative evaluations. It can use carbon dioxide laser to smooth the remaining wrinkles by covering the skin to achieve a more advanced result. A separate procedure can be followed for raising eyebrows. To raise the eyebrow, an incision is made on the scalp and the skin is tightened.

How Long Does Eyelid Surgery Take?

This surgery varies according to the degree of surgery. Under normal conditions, it varies between 45 minutes and 1 hour.

Eyelid Aesthetics Recovery Process

Although the post-operative recovery process differs from person to person, the steps to be taken are as follows.

On the first day, ice should be applied for about 10 to 15 minutes, once every hour you are awake. This application reduces swelling while also removing bruising. Severe pain and pain after this surgery do not occur unless there is an infection. If necessary, pain relievers prescribed by your doctor should be used.

Usually, the sutures will fall off on their own within four to seven days, and if it is undissolved, your doctor will remove it after 1 week.

 In case of severe pain and loss of vision, you should contact your doctor immediately. It takes 2 or 3 weeks for the recovery to be completed. During this time, your eye whites may bleed. This is perfectly normal. You can use glasses. You should not wear eye makeup until healing is complete.

If you feel that your vision has expanded, it means that your surgery went very well.

What are the Possible Risks of Eyelid Aesthetic Surgery?

Eyelid surgery is a very simple operation and complications rarely develop after the operation. One of the possible complications of eyelid surgery is the temporary inability of the eyelids to close completely due to abnormal dryness of the eyes. The patient’s condition improves after a few weeks. During this period eye drops and moisturizers should be used. If this situation exceeds 3 months, a secondary surgical intervention may be required. 

Other potential complications after surgery:
