Prominent  Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) ?

Prominent ear aesthetics, also known as otoplasty, is a surgical technique to change the shape, position and proportion of the ear.  Prominent ear growth, which becomes prominent with growth in the ears or due to birth, can be corrected with prominent ear aesthetics. This surgery can also be applied to ear injuries. Even minor changes to the ear can make a very noticeable difference.

One of the main reasons why people have prominent ear aesthetics is that prominent ears are a source of embarrassment or overshadow the aesthetic beauty. Since it is in the middle of the face and it is a prominent region that first catches the eye, it causes people to look carefully. In addition, people's reservations are their misconceptions that this surgery is a very difficult operation. We can understand from the increase in the number of surgeries that this belief has been broken in recent years in our country. We see that those who want to have this surgery overcome their fears after doing a good research.

Conditions that can be treated with ear surgery:

• Extremely large ears (macrotia)

• Protruding ears in one or both ears to varying degrees,

• Sagging and separation in the earlobes

• Secondary surgeries

• Injury-related conditions

• Surgeries performed for cosmetic purposes

How is Prominent Ear Aesthetics Performed?

Prominent ear aesthetics normally takes an hour or two. It is performed under local or general anesthesia for adults. In addition, if it is an earlobe-related surgery, it is performed under local anesthesia and this procedure takes less time. First of all, an incision is made from the back of the ear in order to hide the scars that may occur in the patient under anesthesia. After this procedure, the cartilage tissue is removed and repositioned to reshape the ear at the desired level or bring it closer to the head. Before the stitches are placed, the skin is tightened in order to draw the new contours of the ear. After all the processes are completed, the ears are wrapped around the circumference by means of bandages. In surgeries performed with local anesthesia, you can go home on the same day.

What is the Prominent Ear Aesthetics Recovery Process?

After the surgery, the dressings are removed at a time to be determined by your doctor, taking into account the course of your surgery and the healing process. This period is generally 10 to 15 days. Then the head guard is put on until the wound heals to protect the ears. It usually stays put for a few weeks. Patients can return to their work and normal lives within 10 to 15 days after surgery.

The following conditions may develop after ear aesthetic surgery:

• Slight bruising may occur around the ears for about two weeks.

• A small scar may occur that will disappear over time.

• Pain may develop in the first few days.

• Numbness or tingling in the ears may occur for several weeks.

Apart from these situations, there may be some discomfort in the healing process. You must follow the post-operative recovery protocols that your doctor told you after the surgery. Post-operative dressing and care should not be interrupted. After 2 weeks, light sports activities can be done, but it is important not to do activities such as weight lifting until they are permitted.

Is Ear Aesthetic Surgery Dangerous?

In fact, ear correction surgeries are extremely simple, side effects and risk-free surgical operations. However, in some cases, especially infection-based complications develop.

Some of those;

• inflammation of the ear cartilage,

• blood coagulation in the skin,

• hardening of the ears,

• excessive bleeding,

• impaired symmetry of the ears,

• infection at the incision sites,

• An allergic reaction to anesthesia may develop.

If these and similar complications develop, you should immediately contact your surgeon who performed your surgery. With his interest and experience in facial aesthetics, Op. Dr. Erdi Özdemir will give you more detailed information during the appointment.
