Secondary Rhinoplasty

What is Secondary Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a technically difficult operation. In addition, experience, skills and adequate anatomical equipment are very important for a successful surgery. Rhinoplasty is often said to be the most technically demanding procedure, and this is because the anatomy of the nose is variable, analysis of facial proportions requires many years of experience, and surgical procedures require extreme precision. Even in this case, the image obtained during rhinoplasty surgery may change during the healing process, and sometimes a second correction, in medical terms ' Secondary Rhinoplasty ', can be performed to unpredictable changes.

Conditions Causing Secondary Rhinoplasty?

Secondary rhinoplasty is performed in order to correct and improve the form and function of the nose, and to eliminate breathing problems. It is a surgical procedure for these disruptions or changes that occur after your nose has been operated before. The deformities in the nose are asymmetry, measurelessness, disproportion, nose stuck in a mandala, curvature, flattened nose, falling off the tip of the nose, “clown nose”, etc.

Secondary rhinoplasty is usually required in 5 to 10% of cases, depending on the complexity of the original procedure. This does not mean that the initial rhinoplasty procedure was performed improperly, but that some unforeseen changes occur during the recovery period that alter the appearance achieved during the surgery.

Even in experienced hands, there will be patients who have problems that would necessitate secondary rhinoplasty procedure. In these cases, the rhinoplasty surgeon will perform this procedure himself. However, in some cases, it may be necessary to see a more experienced secondary rhinoplasty surgeon when the rhinoplasty surgeon cannot make the adjustment himself.

Considerations in Choosing a Surgeon?

When choosing a secondary rhinoplasty surgeon, it is important to consider the surgeon's level of experience and the number of rhinoplasty procedures the surgeon performs. It is important to determine if the surgeon is confident about making the revision, and you can usually understand this level of confidence in the consultation. However, as we have mentioned, the indispensable part of rhinoplasty is experience. Another point is to pay attention to patient satisfaction surveys and feedback from patients.

How is Secondary Rhinoplasty Surgery Applied?

The surgery is generally performed under general anesthesia and for this the open rhinoplasty procedure is usually performed. Because secondary rhinoplasty requires an open approach, it is important to accurately establish the change in the anatomy of the nose and to position any grafts that may be needed. However, closed secondary rhinoplasty surgery can also be performed in appropriate cases.

When Should I Have Secondary Nose Aesthetics?

After the first surgery, a certain period of time is required for a second surgery due to physical factors such as skin type, skin thickness and healing process. It is generally considered appropriate to wait about a year after the first surgery. This allows all swelling and scars to mature before considering a second treatment.

Patients initially have checks one week, three months, and one year after the first surgery. During this follow-up period, an idea is obtained about whether the surgery was successful or whether additional surgery is required.

When Can I Come Around After Secondary Rhinoplasty?

A nasal splint is usually worn for the first week after surgery. Swelling and some bruising around the eyes can be expected after the surgery, it starts to heal after the third day. This may take up to a week.

There may be a small swelling on your nose that only you and your surgeon will probably notice. This situation disappears after 6 months and the final shape of your nose becomes clear after it has completely healed.

Postoperative patients are informed about follow-up appointments and informed about appropriate lifestyle and physical care options. Your surgeon will advise you to avoid extreme sports or activities until you recover. Since secondary rhinoplasty surgery is to correct previous interventions, it is important for patients to follow the care plan provided by the surgeon so as not to disrupt the progress of the operation.

If you have a condition that requires secondary rhinoplasty, you should talk this with your doctor. With over years of experience performing hundreds of revision rhinoplasty surgeries, Op. Dr. Erdi Özdemir will enlighten you on all the steps you will take and what you should do.
